I find myself migrating more and more toward custom drywalling jobs as well as high end remodeling jobs. I more frequently get right in the middle of a sound control job. I have done research on sound and sound control products and techniques, and have experienced the growth of a profitable addition to my business. I have used the Green Glue and found it to be very easy to use. I have no material waste and I have some very satisfied customers. Highly recommended!

Rives Audio Testimonial

We (Rives Audio) are in the completion stages of a high-end Home Theater, in the Chicago area. We specified Green Glue for the first time on this project, having used soundboard (Celotex or an equivalent) before. In fact, I have been using 1/2" soundboard as a 'change of medium' between two layers of 5/8" sheetrock in my studio design work for 25 or more years.

I have just returned from a site visit to the Chicago project and had a chance to evaluate the preliminary results. I have to say that the Green Glue product is exceptional as a damping factor. It reduces the ability of the sheetrock to vibrate at its fundamental frequencies (relative to spacing and attachment) with great efficiency, so much so that we intend to specify Green Glue for all our future work.

Just a quick note to tell you how pleased we are with the Green Glue. Having used it in three jobs now, we have had the opportunity to assess its performance. We’re really pleased with the results.

In one particular job in Forest Lake we were outside the theater and could hear very low noise. When the door was opened, we were pounded by the sound levels in the room. The customer was really very impressed at the level of sound isolation.

Keep up the good work! Dallas

Club Gemini owners making progress about noise problem:

Friday, June 16, 2006 - Bangor Daily News - The substance responsible for dampening the sound is Audio Alloy's Green Glue. When sound hits this material, it is deflected, turned into heat, and sent down the wall, instead of outside, according to the manufacturer. The glue is spread on several layers of plywood and sheetrock comprising both an outer and inner wall. Separating the two walls is a 1-inch space, allowing the inside wall to shake and vibrate and the outside wall to remain still.

When councilors and residents stepped out into the parking lot for the sound demonstration, many commented on the positive effects of the wall.

"There is a 'wow' factor as everyone comes out," council member Gerry Palmer noted.

Granahan Construction Testimonial

We just completed another job with Green Glue and wanted to tell you how pleased this one particular customer is. She has a loud snoring neighbor that kept her up at night. She shares a common wall with him in her condo.

A quick application of the Green Glue and drywall to that common wall solved the problem. Although we do all sorts of projects, large and small, this one was quite satisfying given this lady’s obvious emotional relief after we were done.

We have several large jobs on the horizon where we will be using Green Glue. Thanks again for introducing it to us!

Caveman Home Theater Testimonial

After working with Green glue and seeing (and hearing) for myself the benefits that were achieved by simply applying a small layer of your product between to standard sheets of drywall, I was totally sold.  I personally have used several standard soundproofing materials that are readily available and nothing can stand up to Green Glue.  The idea that you can insert thick sound board and still not have the damping properties of Green Glue is just amazing.  My hat is off to your team of engineers.

My next project is already being specified with Green Glue.  No exceptions!

Simply put I am a loyal Green Glue applicator!

CAN I PUT THIS IN MY CAR?

My Home Theater is directly below the master bedroom in my house. The main speakers are a mere few *feet* away from someone sleeping upstairs. I effectively added 3 layers of drywall (two layers of GG with 50% coverage each) rather than 2 layers of drywall with 100% coverage in between. The first layer was applied in between the joists directly to the floor above. I would highly recommend 3 layers of drywall @ 50% Green Glue coverage.

Green Glue helped me design a room where I could listen to music at reasonably high volumes without disturbing someone sleeping above. I can also crank the music to ear-bleeding levels without disturbing anyone else in the rest of the house!"

Thank you for all of your help with my recoding studio build out. After weeks of work, we’re done and I’m so happy with what we’ve accomplished. The rooms turned out as soundproof as expected. I may add the second door as you suggested since that seems to be the only area where any sound escapes. Thanks for the tip on using a camera rather than window between rooms. That sliced a big problem off the list.

I wanted to drop you a quick line regarding the ceiling system we installed. The open baffle design from Rives Audio specified that I not install drywall, yet I wanted sound isolation. Applying the Green Glue to the underside of the subfloor above as well as to the joists really cut the sound down much more than I thought possible. Great product and great service!! Highly recommended.

I love the new tubes, guys! Much better than the old buckets. Faster and cleaner than ever. Goes on the studs really smooth. See, that’s the advantage of taking two years to complete a room… I get to try all of your products as they evolve!
Seriously, the stuff works exceptionally well and I’m glad I read about it on the forums.

I never thought soundproofing would be such an important part of my room build, but when I think of the fact that I almost did NOTHING for soundproofing, I shudder. It’s so nice to be able to turn up the volume. It’s silly to invest so much in equipment and share it with the neighbors!

Thank you again for all of your help.

Of these (building materials) my hat has to go to the Green Glue (www.greengluecompany.com). The most significant change was when we applied the Green Glue to the drywall. I was very concerned as the poster boxes penetrate the back wall - I was worried that they would rattle - there is none. Also, when the theater is fully rocking (and there are four LARGE subs in there) the most that can be heard upstairs in the dining room is a low rumble (my wife compares it to a truck going by on the street behind us). Truly amazing stuff.

We finally put up our control room ceiling, which consists of 2 sheets of 5/8" sheetrock and a layer of Green Glue between them as prescribed (troweled on with a notched trowel). The sheetrock is hanging from hat track which is hanging from C-channel which is hanging from Kinetics ICW-100 isolation hangers. A gap of around 3/16" at the ceiling perimeter is filled with OSI SC-175 acoustical sealant.

So what do I think of the results? I am totally impressed with the damping characteristic of the Green Glue.

It's an excellent product and at 80 cents a square foot is worth the money, specifically for its ability to drastically reduce the "ringing" of the sheetrock ceiling to inaudible. This ceiling will not be storing and sending LF energy back into the room to muddy up the sound. By comparison, I've got one half of a double wall up, with 2x4 studs spaced 16" o.c., 3/4" MDF + 1/8" MLV + 5/8" sheetrock. I built this wall partition before hearing of GG.

Bang on the wall between the stud screws with the meat of your hand, and you hear some low frequency ringing. Bang on a section of ceiling and you hear--no ringing at all. It's just like all those graphs on The Green Glue Company's website. The difference is dramatic. So dramatic that I've already decided to add another layer of 1/2" gyp to these walls with GG this time.

We have been living in out townhouse for many years now. A neighbor moved in and plays his music quite loud and quite late. We tried the Green Glue and added a layer of drywall, caulked up the outlets as you suggested and waited for the glue to dry.

You suggested we wait 2 weeks to see if we were successful, but I can tell you after only three days the sound is already perfectly tolerable. We are just so pleased and relieved. Thank you for all of your patience and help.

A quick piece of feedback for you guys. The idea of placing drywall between the ceiling joists to the subfloor above works great. Takes some time, but since I had no direct access to the floor above, the only way to get some Green on that floor above was to do it from below.

This has worked really well, and I haven’t insulated and drywalled the ceiling shut yet.

I guess my biggest comment about GG with this room is that it did what I expected it to do.  Right behind my room, I have a workshop, and that workshop has an air exchanger and a loud dehumidifier.  If you're in that room when the dehumidifier is on, you can barely have a conversation with someone else.  With GG and double drywall,  I barely hear it when its on, and I definitely don't hear it over the fan in my Sim2.   The GG was totally worth the money.  And  it could have been even better, had I been able to GG/DD my ceiling.

Thanks again,

Just to give you my experience, I used double drywall and green glue on my entire basement. On the ceiling, I also used PAC clips. Prior to finishing the basement, I couldn't even play a radio at low levels without it bothering my teenage kids when they were doing homework upstairs. Now the drywall is finished and doors (exterior with seals) are installed. I can crank my stereo up to "comfortably loud" levels and it isn't heard upstairs at all.

I also have a furnace room next to the theater area. The wall between the furnace room and theater is a standard 2X4 wall with double drywall and green glue on both sides. I have double communicating exterior doors between the two rooms. The furnace is VERY loud inside the furnace room and was very bothersome in the entire basement before the walls were up. Now that the walls and doors are up I can barely hear a faint whisper noise from the furnace from inside the theater.

Nothing is "sound proof", but overall I would say my results are excellent with the double drywall and greenglue.

I wrestled with justifying the price of Green Glue, especially because I was putting in recessed lights and in-wall speakers and subwoofer.

I did purchase the green glue.  And I am extremely happy I did!!!

I did use double 5/8" drywall.  All the walls and the ceiling are filled with insulation.  I have a double swing door, that while it is solid core it does not yet have sound proofing around the edges.  All the speakers have back boxes (boxes inside the wall).

I did cut holes in my sound barrier but I think it holds up pretty damn well anyway!

Thanks again,

Some non-scientific proof:

Just last weekend I had my brother over.  He wanted to show his new conquest the HT he helped build.  They were in the room exactly above the HT with my wife and mother.  I was in the HT watching "Top Gun" and getting it set up to a point to show off the capabilities of the theater (you know a dogfight scene).  When I went upstairs to get everyone they had no idea I was in the HT and it was playing "Top Gun".  The TV in the room they were in was on and set to a normal listening level.  You could occasionally make out a thump from the sub if you listened for it.

When I brought them downstairs and into the theater, my practically deaf mother yelled "My god, that is loud!" - she had to yell to be heard over the afterburners...

So not just "Yes", but "HELL YES!!!" is the answer to whether or not to use Green Glue.

My room is above the garage and two sides adjoin to bedrooms. I did 2x5/8 drywall with 100% GG coverage on all 4 walls and ceiling, with regular fiber insulation in the walls and blown on the ceiling, and put an exterior door in with weatherstripping all around (including a threshold to seal the bottom). Here are the things I've learned from my experience that may help you:

Get the door jamb installed before the drywall goes up (I was delayed and had to end up cutting back the drywall to get it in and that left me with the difficult challenge to fill the gap -- which I did quite well with joint compound but there were side effects that caused other problems -- you can read about it in my thread if you are interested).

Your biggest source of sound leak will be air gaps. I didn't know how to treat the outlet boxes for example and I can talk through those just fine. I've seen people wrap them with some material and spread acoustical caulk all over it as well, don't know the results but I would investigate that -- more than likely this WILL BE your biggest sound leak in your room if you do everything else correctly.

Be sure and use a threshold on the bottom of the door -- makes a big difference.

When you take the door off for painting it be sure and mark which hinges go in which spot (use a sharpie for example on the backside of the hinge and on the wood prior to taping it off so it's there when you remove the tape). They look the same but are not quite and re-hanging the door will be a nightmare if you don't know which is which.

Since the upstairs is your immediate concern I would be sure and build boxes that are GG'd for any recessed lights (or anything else that goes through the ceiling to be honest). It's amazing how much sound goes through a little hole. Or rather how much sound is blocked by the GG'd drywall and lets you pinpoint the sound through the leak more easily (hard to say -- the reason I say this was my brother was on the other side of a wall in a garage attic space and the only way I could communicate with him was to shout through one of my power outlet boxes, there was little to no sound anywhere else).

Okay, having pointed out all the things to be aware of and avoid I would also like to add the following:

I LOVE MY GREEN GLUE INSTALL!!

That's right, even with the minor problems I still have, I cannot believe how great it works. Especially if you consider that you go to all this cost and effort and can't really test it until the room is half way done (or about 75% in my case). I was quite nervous that all this effort (and money) was being put into my dream theater and the big question always loomed: Would I be able to watch movies and TV and sound levels I like without having my wife come pounding on the door late at night yelling at me to turn it down?!

The answer (which I learned only a couple of weeks ago) is YES. I can watch movies at my preferred sound levels (which is nervous loud -- I still worry she'll come banging on the door which is what always happened in the past) yet every morning I ask her if she heard anything the night before and she didn't. Nor do the kids wake up on the rooms beside the theater.

Sunday evening I had my family over for a quick sound/picture demo and in the middle of oohing and aahing over the Master and Commander battle scene and the Incredibles island fight scenes (with the kids) my brother came in (who's had plenty of viewing time before so knows how it sounds inside) made my favorite comment of the night: "Dude, I couldn't even hear it at the top of the stairs and could barely hear it outside the door!" SWEET!

So yeah, spend a little more time and effort to close up those last holes/leaks and you'll be happy as can be!

Thank-you for taking some time with me on this project.  I work with several contractors and architects to help guide them in their projects.  It is always a challenge to get builders to buy into something different than the status quo.  Most of these ideas they approach like they are the ‘black arts’.

My information and suggestions come from white papers and test results that I read ‘on-line’ and I have found that most companies give you only a vague picture of what is really happening.  I understand that this is in the interests of moving product but it does not always serve the end user the best.  What I feel is unique about your company is that you seem to genuinely want to teach people what this industry is about.  I think I can safely say that your test results are the only test results that provide a reference test assembly so we actually know what the ‘net’ difference is using various products.  This is very important to me as I will not recommend any product that does not give me those results as I feel they are trying to mislead the reader.  Also, you do not disregard other products if you feel they have merit in an assembly.  This pure honesty approach is refreshing and I hope that you continue to educate people like myself.  You will definitely promote loyalty.

4-13-07:

I recently built a sound reduction room for an extremely loud rock band. The construction plan was simple - create a mass-spring(air)-mass room inside a room to stop the intense volumes of drums, bass, and guitar from reaching the outside world.

At first, we were somewhat disappointed that the final green glue/2nd drywall layer did not seem to reduce the sound by as much as we hoped, and we did not hear or measure the significant change in the bass frequencies that we hoped. We were really hoping that even just the extra mass of the 2nd layer of the drywall would really do it, but the change was simply not that significant. I took away that really that extra layer of drywall and green glue might not really have been that cost effective an answer for the few dB that I had reduced with it.

But that all changed within about 3 weeks. The difference (across all frequencies, but especially the bass) was not small. It was an incredible change! The sound reduction went from acceptable to superlative, especially in the bass frequencies. I was truly amazed. There is no way it could have been any other element in the build besides the Green Glue that made this change.

I know the literature says to wait 30 days for the product to take "full effect" but not understanding the science, one still expects some immediate difference. But my mild disappointment was changed to elation and now complete respect for this product. I should not have doubted Green Glue.

I am VERY impressed with your product. Green Glue works. Plain and simple.

Thank you for making a great product that does what it is supposed to do. Keep up the good work.

We have used 21 cases in our house LOL! I was pretty surprized by how much GG we have used, but we are doing a great room that vaults from 14 to 20 feet. We even did the entire ceiling with 5/8" rock; and depsite much moaning from the guys (that 5/8" rock is H-E-A-V-Y!), they got it done. The results were so good, that I decided to do the master bedroom on three walls and the ceiling. Ended up running inside a closet under the stairs that backs a closet that we are converting in to a wine cellar, and then around the hallway that abutts it. We are also doing doubling up the entire 2nd floor underlayment of OSB. We did finish the underlayment in the master bedroom and combined with the blown cellulose we added between the joist and the double rock/GG kitchen ceiling, have created an extremely quite floor system; almost sounds like there is padding down when walking on the bare OSB now.

While the process required way more time, money and effort than I first thought, the results speak for themselves. I also had the guys caulk every single joint and the house is noticeable tighter in terms of how well sealed it is, and have noticed the house holds the cool in much better now and enables the A/C to cycle far less, which in sunny AZ (it was 106* this weekend) is no small matter. I have become a GG junkie. :-D.
